Leonid Roshal is a highly qualified universal pediatric surgeon. In recent years he has been working in-depth on the problem of urgent abdominal surgery, and new directions in traumatology and neurosurgery. He was born in April 27, 1933 in the city of Livny, the Oryol region.
Leonid Roshal graduated from the pediatric faculty of the Second Pirogov Moscow State Medical University awarded by Lenin order in 1957, after that he worked as a district pediatrician. From 1959 to 1961 he was trained in residency at the Department of pediatric surgery of Central Institute of Physicians’ Improvement awarded by Lenin order (TSOLIUV). From1962 Roshal worked in Moscow Regional Scientific and Research Clinical Institute as a junior researcher first, and from 1965 as a senior researcher. In 1982, after the competition he was elected head of the Department of urgent surgery of Pediatric Scientific and Research Institute of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. In 1964 Roshal defended his master’s thesis “Acute intussusception in children", in 1970 his PhD thesis "Long-term results of unilateral lung surgery in children".
Professor Roshal is the founder of scientific school in pediatric surgery for the development of conservative treatment of surgical diseases in children requiring early surgical intervention. He developed methods of conservative treatment of acute surgical diseases of chest and abdominal cavity (acute intestinal obstruction, suppurant diseases of lungs and pleura), which were publicized in the textbooks and manuals on pediatric surgery and are widely used in the practical work of pediatric surgeons of our country.
Leonid.Roshal is an author and a co-author of 250 scientific papers, as well as a co-author of 7 books and manuals, and a number of guidelines.
He received awards of VDNH and has 8 certificates of inventions.
He is a member of the Presidential Council on Civil Society Institutions and Human Rights, an expert of the World Health Organization, the Honorary President of SAMU SOCIAL INTERNATIONAL (Moscow), a member of board of the Pediatric Surgeons of Russia and Honorary Member of the Russian Association of Pediatric Surgeons, a member of board of the Union of Pediatricians of Russia, a member of the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons, President of the International Charity Foundation to help children in disasters and wars, the Chairman of the Interdepartmental Commission of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and the Russian Ministry of Health "Urgent states of children", the Co-Chairman of All-Russian Union of Public Associations "Civil society for the children of Russia", a member of the Council of the World Association of Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WADEM), the Chairman of the International Committee to help children in disasters and wars of the World Association of Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WADEM), President of the National Medical Chamber.
Under the leadership of Leonid Roshal there were written and defended 25 theses. Roshal is a repeated participant of conferences, symposia and congresses in Russia, Germany, England, Spain, Japan, Greece, the United States and other countries.
Leonid Roshal was involved in helping the children of Armenia, Georgia, Algeria, India, Japan, Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, Haiti after the earthquakes, in Bashkiria after the train accident, in military conflicts in Yugoslavia, Nagorno-Karabakh, Gaza, and in Romania after the revolution.
